SOUTHEAST ASIA: HANOI, VIETNAM
After arriving from the airport, we found ourselves in Times City, a new development in Hanoi, sitting on top of what used to be business' and housing for over 100 years. At the edge of the new complex lies a great example of gentrification and how it changes landscapes all over the world. At the base of the building where we stayed there was not one, but two convenience stores, two coffee shops and a pool that ran between 3 other identical buildings. The apartments were large and modern, including two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living space. It had all the luxuries, a full kitchen, in suite laundry and reliable high speed internet. It was definitely not what we expected, but a pleasant surprise. Just a short trip by Grabcab into the city ran us about $2.50 CAD. We spent the next few days exploring the city mostly in the Old Quarter. Here are some things we found, starting with our Airbnb.

THE ARTS- THANG LONG WATER PUPPET THEATRE
We had read about the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi, and had wondered whether it would border on cheesy, despite some very good reviews. We decided to check it out, since it was in the Old Quarter and easily accessible (we wouldn't have to venture out of town to attend the show). An added bonus was that the cost was only $5 US per person and it lasted about an hour, so if it wasn't great, we wouldn't be out much in the way of time or money.
The show was in Vietnamese, and it was actually very sweet, and funny. It was perfect for all ages, and the live traditional music was mesmerizing. Despite not understanding what was said, the story line was of old Vietnamese traditions, which were portrayed through the movements of the puppets. It was amazing how well they could manoeuvre each puppet with precision, while being completely hidden behind the bamboo curtains. Definitely a must see for those visiting Hanoi!
