SOUTHEAST ASIA: SAIGON, HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM

IMG_5825.jpg

We spent the first night going to a local beer and taco place located near our Airbnb. The following day we toured around a few breweries and the War Remnants Museum, a visual history of the atrocities committed against the Vietnamese people. The people here are friendly and very kind, it's hard to believe all of the hardships they have endured.

FROM THE KITCHEN- RALF'S ARTISAN GELATO

Ralf has taken his gelato-making talent from Germany and Italy and has infused it with some Vietnamese/Asian flare. His love for creating gelato is just another amazing thing you can experience in Ho Chi Minh City. Make sure you check out his facebook page, he is always announcing new and limited time flavours.

HANDCRAFTED- THAO SILK

Before our trip we were advised that Vietnam has a lot of talented tailors and seamstresses that can produce amazing garments in a short period of time. Thao Silk is a highly rated tailor with a large selection of silk, patterns and undeniable skill. We had a custom dress made in one day.

JUSTINS- BEER LIST SAIGON - HO CHI MINH

Sometimes you discover a new beer by accident, sometimes you spend a lot of time planning and anticipating it. Then you show up in Saigon and you are bombarded with brewery after brewery, tap house after tap house. We could have never anticipated what we found in Saigon. Here is a brief look at what we could fit in.

BIA CRAFT

Every house beer at Bia Craft had its own custom glass. We also sampled two of their best received menu items. With over 48 beers on tap and an unknown amount of bottles on hand, this should be any beer/cider lover's first stop in Saigon.

Our second stop on our craft beer journey brought us to an amazing brewery, tap house and restaurant all in one. East West's space is huge, boasting 30+ foot ceilings, allowing you to see the large brewing equipment. The restaurant itself is a short walk up a set of granite stairs to give you a view down on to the French Colonial street below. They had at least 8 main beers they run all year round, a handful of seasonal beers, and a large fridge filled with an obscene amount of craft bottles from around Vietnam. We were still full from our first stop of the day but we did enjoy a small order of pork belly bites, see below.

Pasteur Street Brewing Company is the most awarded craft beer in Vietnam. We found it all over Ho Chi Minh but we had to go to one of their own original tap rooms, to see it for ourselves. We stopped at two of their locations, below are some of the photos from our visits. While both locations had most of their standard beers, the first location we stopped at had their stronger ales, stouts and a diverse list of sours, unlike we have ever seen before.

To start off our second day in Saigon we went directly to Heart Of Darkness Brewery. We tried a handful of their flagships as well as some seasonals. The menu looked good, but of course there was a dare staring me directly in the face (Agonizing Death Wings). I had to order them. They were delicious, but still not the hottest I've ever tried.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

WINKING SEAL BREWERY

A nice taproom with plenty of choices and a menu with bar bites, charcuterie boards and even desserts for those with a sweet tooth. Check out their Facebook page here.

SANCHO CANTINA

Sancho's Craft Beer + Mexican Kitchen has a large assortment of dishes and an equally large assortment of craft beer. If you're visiting Saigon's Night Street, stop in and have a beer and burrito.
